Balsero, Guayaberas y Telemundo

I want to thanks Telemundo for the interview they will air today at 6:30 in their Spanish television news.

20 years ago on Wednesday August 31, 1994 I left Cuba on improvised boat from the Matanzas province in the central part of Cuba. We were 9 men with almost no provisions and no experience at sea. We encounter a really bad storm and almost die, our boat was turned back to Cuba and we landed at a beach near Havana.

The next day only two of the original rafters tried again, this time we were picked up at sea by the US coast guard on Monday September 5 1994. We were toked to Guantanamo bay Cuba were we spent 13 months waiting to be processed and hoping to make it to the United States, I was finally allowed to enter this great Country on October 1995.

Many of the Cubans who tried this trip did not make it, may their soul rest in peace.
I know the pain and sacrifice a family had to endure without knowing weather i was dead or alive.

Today I had an opportunity to share my story on this Telemundo interview, I was able to show what we were able to accomplish on this great country of ours, with hard work and sacrifice. I’m forever gratefull to the US for allowing me to become part of it. If you have a change to watch it the interview will be transmitted this afternoon at 6:30pm in Telemundo Spanish news.

—————————————

Cuban Guayaberas In South Africa

Our guayaberas are famous world wide! Last month we shipped three beautiful linen Guayabera shirts to a customer in Africa. The gentleman was worry about getting the shirts in South Africa since he had not order from us before.

We took the order details via email and send him a PayPal money request to pay for his guayaberas shirts. We got the payment and the shirts were shipped via priority mail international. Two weeks later his Guayabera shirts arrived in South Africa and here is the email he sent to us:

“Hi Alexis,

You may wonder why I come back to you so soon. Today I went to check with the post office and found my shirts there waiting for collection. Anyway, that’s not important. I was very much pleased with the quality and the neat work that is shown in the product.

I wish to say that the shirts are suitable for my daily life in many ways. Firstly they are formal enough for attending official gatherings in my work situation. Secondly, as a Durbanite they will make life easier because the place has warm to mild climate. In brief, the shirts are very good in terms of quality and standard. They are just a cut above the rest. Thank you very much for this product.

Mr. Mthembu, PhD”

Here are the guayabera shirts we shipped to Mr. Mthembu:

I wanted to thank all the veterans today. If any of your family and or friends is a veteran thank them for me also. I will share with you my close experience with three different generations of veterans:

World War II

I had the honor of meeting a World War II veteran he was an honorable respectable man, who had an interesting life, his name was John. He married my wife’s aunt in Cuba in the 50’s she didn’t know English and he didn’t know Spanish at the time, but fell in love and spend their lives together. He was a very smart and resourceful man too. One day John showed me a book he had put together with English words that looked and meant the same in Spanish; it helped him at the beginning of his relationship with his wife Rosa. John also taught me about the Masons, he was a Master Mason. I will always remember him with respect and admiration.

Vietnam War
My friend Evelio was a young man when he and his brother enlisted in the military to serve the United Sates Army. Evelio and his brother were Peter Pan children and just a few years earlier his parents had sent them alone to the United States to escape the communism in Cuba. They fought in Vietnam like they would have done for the land they were born in. Evelio never talks about the Vietnam days, but I know they serve this country honorably. I also admire him because he is always helping other people, and trys to liven up your day with jokes.

Resent wars and military service men
As you may know I spend 13 months in Guantanamo Bay before coming to the United States. (read More here) As an immigrant and somebody who grew up in Communist Cuba I didn’t know what to expect from the Unite States military. My experiences there however left me with admiration for their professionalism and a unique ability to make things happen. I wrote to my mom from the United State base in Guantanamo “….Guantanamo Bay is the most clean and organized city in Cuba, they treat you with respect…they eat and sleep on the same conditions we do…everyone is treated with the same rights…” Obviously not everything was perfect but that was true for the most part.

Thank you for serving this great country.
