    I work at a college in New York where the majority of students come from Latin America.  What I got from this blog is a reassurance that Latinos must  teach their children to be proud of their culture at a very early age and not to allow peer pressure to make their children ashamed of their roots.  Nicolita had an opportunity to go back and to see for herself that there are many reasons to be proud of being Cuban.  However, growing up, she was embarrazed of being Cuban and I am  sure she suffered because of it.  One of our  President was from  Cuban parents, born and raised in New York City. She  always said and I quote ” I was born Cuban and that is not negotiable.”  At Hostos CC we celebrate Latino Cultures and provide our  students with  ways to meet artists, professionals and educators who look like them. 

    Nicolita’s cuban family is just beautiful!

    Having left Cuba when I was 21 years old and leaving everything behind – home, family, friends – this hits very close to the heart.  I went back after 25 years and cried all the way from the US to Cuba and back.  That moment when the plane touched down at Rancho Boyeros (Jose Marti) airport cannot be described with words!   The family in the video used the word “surreal” and that is as close as one can come to a description.  No one can ever imagine what it feels like.  The utter sense of loss and sadness.  The emptiness.  The loneliness.  The sense of despair and helplessness.  The feeling that no matter what you do or where you go, you are never complete because your soul has been ripped out.  Knowing that you are never complete and that you do not belong anywhere.

    Settled in Virginia to help Haitian young folks in Libery University prepare to serve in their country, I fully emphathise. Having spent my life in Haiti, and having helped my granddaughter find her husband in Havana (!), I fully felt the
    emotions of Nicolita and her family in their wonderful Cuban experience. At 86, I’m now wondering what my home in
    Heaven will be like, and meeting so many other homeowners, each with a key from Jesus. I hope you’ll join the crowd !

    Being from Haiti, I clearly understand your emotions. My brother visited Haiti last year after more than 35 years, he came here as a child. He said that it’s an experience that he wil never forget. He and I we have one last dream that is to visit Cuba. Thank you for sharing your voyage with us and good luck in your business.

    This was absolutely amazing. I cried watching the whole thing. I left Cuba when I was 1 on 1959. They are so lucky to have shared this with thier parents. My dad has passed and my mom doesn’t travel anymore :-( I would love to see Cuba.  Thank you for a wonderful video

    This has been a True Testimony to what I have shared with my children about our Cuban culture and heritage. My parents left Cuba in 1962 with 5 children; my father insisted we speak only spanish at home so as not to forget our native language. I hope some day I may be able to share the same experience with my children and grandchildren. I am now 57 years old left Cuba when I was 6. Nicolita, I thank you and your family for sharing this unforgetable, inspiring, and emotional moment. We will look forward to supporting your collection of fashions and designs.     My childhood friends in Southern oregon USA were refugees from Castro’s Cuba.  Jose Artime and family  Pepe, Mercy, Blanque, Lulu, Mary, and thier mother.  Even though they were forced to leave with nothing, they bulit themselves back up to prosperety.  They never stopped loving their homeland–Cuba–and always had good things to say about the past living there.   You can take the boy out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the boy!!
